Setting the scene

Welcome to Neuro Speech Therapy, a new speech and language therapy service covering Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire, and East Ayrshire. I am Helen, a speech and language therapist (SLT) who has many years of experience in working with people with stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, among many other neurological conditions.

It can feel daunting to take the leap into private healthcare. This will be even more so if you have just been given a new diagnosis- you are experiencing changes to your health, possibly needing to make changes to your routine, take new medications, and deal with healthcare professionals who might unwittingly bombard you with information.

I want to take this opportunity to express my understanding of this challenging situation you find yourself in. I have spent many years working in the NHS and know the importance of targeted therapy at the right time. I also understand the importance of feeling supported by your therapy team so you can focus on rehabilitation.

So why have I set up this practice? I am looking to provide the best service possible to those needing speech and language therapy. This means providing a mix of one-to-one therapy sessions and group sessions, and supporting family members to best understand how to communicate in a new way.

At the core, Neuro Speech Therapy is here to offer compassionate, skilled, and evidence-based therapy that you can trust.

I’ll be using this blogging space to give you information and guidance on topics such as:

  • what does speech and language therapy assessment involve?

  • what happens in a therapy session?

  • does aphasia get better?

  • what can I do as someone who knows a person with communication changes?

If you have specific topics or questions you’d like to read more about, let me know via the “contact me” button. I want to take the opportunity to thank you for reading this first blog post, and hope you will return to see what comes next!
